Today was mostly a travel day. We got in a van at our hotel in Madaba with two young women from London and we headed south along the King’s Highway. If you want some idea of how old this highway is, just look at Numbers 20:17, as it describes Moses leading the Hebrews towards the promised land:
Num 20:17 "Please let us pass through your country. We will not go through any field or vineyard, or drink water from any well. We will travel along the king's highway and not turn to the right or to the left until we have passed through your territory.""
It has been a trade route for longer than we have recorded history. It traverses some amazing canyons:
And is was guarded by Crusader and Moslem castles:
There was snow on the hills as we neared Wadi Musa, the town just outside Petra. We’ll visit Petra tomorrow, one of the truly amazing sites of the world.
PS: I normally do a pretty good job of finding adequate hotels that are budget priced. I may have failed for this stay. The hotel is staffed by REALLY nice people, but it is ragged, cold, small, and has the hardest beds I have slept on EVER. We serious thought about moving before we unpacked. I may never heard the end of this from Shawn. But, the view from our room is amazing!
