Day Three

OK, the today’s battle with rain was a bit of a tie.

We woke up to light rain, but headed off to Mt Nebo, about six miles west. Our driver first stopped by the ruins of a beautiful Byzantine church that is little visited, an unexpected treat.

Mt Nebo greeted us with both light rain, clouds, and crowds. This was the place Moses last view the promised land from afar, just before his death. It would have been nice to have had clearer weather for a view west into Israel. Glad we stopped there, but it was a mixed visit.

Next we went down to a Biblically history rich area of Bethany Beyond the Jordan. This is where there was a major ford in the Jordan River in Biblical times. A short list of things that happened there:

-Israelites camp there, listen to Moses last words, then cross into promised land.

-Prophet Elijah ascends to heaven in a chariot of fire here.

-John the Baptist does his baptizing here.

-Jesus and his disciples hang out here before they go to heal Lazarus (Jn. 10:40).

The tour of the area was a bit too short, but it started to rain again just as it was about over, so perhaps the timing was in our favor.

Next it rained like crazy as we drive to Amman, but cleared up right about the time we got into downtown and the Citadel area. I came here mostly to visit the archaeological museum and see the “Copper” Dead Sea Scroll that is there. However, IT WAS GONE! Aghhhhhhhhhh! It is being moved to a new museum that is not even open yet. That’s just dumb.

We had rain, hail, and sleet as we drove in heavy traffic back to Madaba. We should have good weather for the next few days as we travel south to Petra. A final picture for Ariana.
